Fine Arts

The view from the fine arts building is simply spectacular. Windows upon windows, our studios provide students with the most glorious views of our lush campus. Each season will offer a new perspective, a new color, a new way to observe.

This idea of trying and exploration in our seventh and eighth grade also rings true within the fine arts department. Those students will take a semester each year of 2D art, which is painting and drawing, and 3D art, sculpture and ceramics.

Nine through 12th grade students are encouraged to continue their journey in the fine arts, which would then also include printmaking and photography as course options.

These studio spaces encourage all students to step outside what is comfortable, to take risks. We don't expect you coming to us as Picasso. Our teachers are here to help you learn how to observe three-dimensionally and then translate that to the two-dimensional page.

As one of our valued pillars, the arts help enhance the experience and develop yet another bit of self.

Our fine arts building also houses one of two art galleries we have on our campus. The other gallery, the Bonsack, is located in our main building, right across from our head of school's office.

Those galleries will typically showcase the work of local professional artists who will come to campus and discuss the exhibit and answer questions posed by our students.

One of our most popular exhibits is guaranteed to always be our intensive student show. It highlights a year's worth of work from our committed and dedicated art students. It travels their journey, it tells their story, and it captivates us all.

The entire JBS artwork collection that adorns our walls and hallways is a beautiful mix of current students and professional artists. Some of the professional pieces are owned by Burroughs, and others are on loan. Sometimes it's hard to tell whose is whose, but what a gift for us all to be surrounded by such beauty and thought-provoking perspective.
