We believe in the benefits of physical activity and sports participation. All Buroughs students are required to do sport in some capacity, starting with our middle school PE.
During PE, seventh and eighth graders will go from unit to unit, trying, learning, playing all the sports that we offer in our upper school. The majority of our PE classes are taught by our varsity and junior varsity coaches. These sport units usually run about three weeks, and students can try them all, see what they like.
Middle school students will also spend at least one class period a week training in our weight room with our strength and conditioning coach. We want all of our students to feel empowered to be in this space successfully. It's our hope that by early exposure to all of these sports and having this opportunity to try them again in eighth grade, that our middle school students will be in a place to make a well-informed decision about which sport they'd like to pursue in ninth through 12th grades.
In addition to PE, our seventh and eighth graders can participate in a voluntary after-school sport. It's a great way to get to know your new classmates and enjoy that school spirit as new members of our community. As seventh and eighth graders explore different sports, it helps bring humility. No one's good at everything, but everyone will find a place.
In grades nine through 12, every student, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to play on competitive teams. Our no-cut policy allows for all of our students interested in playing a particular sport the chance to play on that team that suits their needs. It's important that our students find joy and return each year with the same excitement as the year before.
Our swimming pool, squash courts, and field hockey fields are the newest addition to our already impressive athletic facility.
We offer lots of sports for our ninth through 12th-grade students, and that list is ever-changing based on the level of interest. Most recently, we've added competitive cheer and outdoor education. For a full list of sports, please refer to our athletic pages.
Some students might opt to take what's called an independent activity. This is a non-school sponsored sport for one of their seasons. Some examples would include horseback riding, figure skating, crew, gymnastics. These would fall under the umbrella of our independent activity.
Athletics function at Buroughs as a way for students to feel good about themselves, find balance in their lives, compete with a sense of honor, enjoy multiple sports, learn to lead by example while chasing greatness within and with each other. Each student will find their place in athletics, contributing to and enjoying the great school spirit here.
Athletics at Buroughs brings the community together to celebrate individual athletic achievement, team achievement, and provides lots of stories for years to come. We use those fields just like a classroom, where you can learn lots of life lessons to carry with you long after you leave Buroughs.
But you never really leave.
